กระทรวงสาธารณสุข (Krasuang Satharanasuk), or the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH), is the primary government body responsible for public health in Thailand. Its mission is to protect and promote the health of all Thai citizens, ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare services.
Key Responsibilities
The MOPH’s extensive responsibilities encompass a wide range of health-related activities, including:
- Policy Development and Regulation: Formulating national health policies, plans, and strategies, as well as establishing and enforcing health regulations and standards. This includes overseeing the safety and efficacy of drugs, medical devices, and food products.
- Healthcare Service Delivery: Managing and supporting a vast network of public hospitals, health centers, and other healthcare facilities across the country. Organizational Structure
The MOPH is headed by the Minister of Public Health, who is a member of the Thai Cabinet. The ministry is organized into several departments and agencies, each responsible for specific areas of public health. Key departments include the Department of Disease Control, the Department of Health, the Department of Medical Services, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Universal Healthcare Coverage
Thailand has made significant progress in achieving universal healthcare coverage through its Universal Healthcare Coverage (UC) scheme, often referred to as the “30 Baht Scheme.” The MOPH plays a central role in administering and managing the UC scheme, which provides access to healthcare services for all Thai citizens. While challenges remain in ensuring equitable access and quality of care, the UC scheme has significantly improved the health and well-being of the Thai population.
Challenges and Future Directions
The MOPH faces numerous challenges in the 21st century, including an aging population, the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases, emerging infectious diseases, and disparities in access to healthcare services. The ministry is working to address these challenges through initiatives such as strengthening primary healthcare, promoting digital health technologies, and investing in workforce development.
