Tomasson’s academic background is rooted in architecture. He graduated as an architect from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Before entering politics, he worked as an architect and ran his own architectural firm. This experience provided him with a unique perspective on urban planning, development, and the built environment, skills that he later brought to his political career.

His entry into politics marked a shift towards public service. He served as the mayor of the Akureyri municipality from 2010 to 2018. During his tenure, Akureyri saw significant development and growth, and Tomasson was credited with fostering a positive environment for innovation and community engagement. His leadership in Akureyri established him as a capable and forward-thinking politician.

Tomasson then rose to become the chairman of the Samfylkingin, the Social Democratic Alliance, a major political party in Iceland. He led the party through a crucial period, navigating complex political landscapes and advocating for social justice, equality, and environmental sustainability. His leadership style is often described as collaborative and pragmatic, focusing on building consensus and finding common ground across the political spectrum.

As chairman, he played a key role in shaping the party’s policies and strategies. He also focused on addressing issues such as income inequality and gender equality.

While he eventually stepped down as chairman, his influence on the Social Democratic Alliance and Icelandic politics remains significant. He continues to be an active voice in public discourse, contributing to debates on important issues facing the nation. He remains a member of the Althingi, the Icelandic Parliament.

Beyond his political career, Tomasson is also involved in academia. He has taught at various institutions, sharing his knowledge and experience with future generations of architects and planners.
