Fifth Harmony: A Harmonizing History

Fifth Harmony, often abbreviated as 5H, rose to prominence as one of the most successful girl groups to emerge from the American version of The X Factor. Formed during the second season in 2012, the group initially comprised Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane, Lauren Jauregui, and Camila Cabello. While they didn’t win the competition, finishing in third place, their undeniable chemistry and powerful vocals secured them a recording contract and launched them into the pop music stratosphere.

Their debut EP, Better Together, released in 2013, introduced audiences to their signature blend of pop, R&B, and contemporary harmonies. The EP performed well, establishing their fanbase, affectionately known as “Harmonizers.” This initial success paved the way for their debut studio album, Reflection, in 2015. Reflection spawned the hit singles “BO$$,” “Sledgehammer,” and “Worth It,” featuring Kid Ink. “Worth It” became their breakout hit, reaching the top 20 in several countries and solidifying their status as a global pop sensation.

Following the success of Reflection, Fifth Harmony released their second studio album, 7/27, in 2016. The album’s lead single, “Work from Home,” featuring Ty Dolla $ign, became a massive international hit, peaking at number four on the Billboard Hot 100. 7/27 further showcased their evolving sound and marked a shift towards more mature themes. The album also included successful singles like “All in My Head (Flex)” and “That’s My Girl.”

In December 2016, Camila Cabello announced her departure from the group to pursue a solo career. This marked a significant turning point for Fifth Harmony, leaving the remaining four members to navigate a new chapter. Despite the change in dynamics, Ally, Normani, Dinah, and Lauren remained committed to the group and released their self-titled third studio album, Fifth Harmony, in 2017. The album demonstrated their resilience and creative control, allowing each member to contribute more significantly to the songwriting process. Singles like “Down” featuring Gucci Mane and “He Like That” further demonstrated their ability to adapt and maintain their relevance in the ever-changing music landscape.

In March 2018, Fifth Harmony announced their indefinite hiatus to allow each member to pursue solo projects. Each member has since embarked on successful solo careers, exploring diverse genres and showcasing their individual talents. Normani has released hits like “Motivation” and collaborated with artists like Sam Smith and Megan Thee Stallion. Ally Brooke has released singles and competed on Dancing with the Stars. Dinah Jane has released solo music and collaborated with artists such as Ty Dolla $ign and A Boogie wit da Hoodie. Lauren Jauregui has explored her alternative R&B sound with singles and collaborations, advocating for social and political issues. While their time together as Fifth Harmony was relatively short, their impact on pop music remains significant, leaving a lasting legacy of girl power, catchy tunes, and impressive vocal harmonies.
