Mohammad Hashemi Rafsanjani
Mohammad Hashemi Rafsanjani (محمد هاشمی رفسنجانی; born 1941, died January 2024) was a prominent Iranian politician and technocrat. He was the older brother of the former President of Iran, Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. Though often overshadowed by his more famous sibling, Mohammad carved out his own significant role in the Iranian political landscape, primarily within the realm of media and administration.
He served as the head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) for over a decade, from 1981 to 1994. This was a crucial period in the formative years of the Islamic Republic, and Mohammad Hashemi wielded considerable influence over the country’s media narrative. During his tenure, IRIB expanded its reach and solidified its position as the dominant voice in Iranian media. He oversaw the development of new television channels and radio stations, shaping the information landscape accessible to the Iranian public. His policies were often aligned with those of his brother, fostering a pragmatic approach to governance and a focus on economic development.
Beyond his role at IRIB, Mohammad Hashemi held various other governmental positions. He served as a deputy minister and advisor in several ministries, contributing his expertise in areas such as industrial development and technology. He was often seen as a technocrat, emphasizing practical solutions and economic progress. His close relationship with Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani provided him with access to the highest levels of power and allowed him to play a key role in policy formulation.
Following the death of his brother in 2017, Mohammad Hashemi remained an influential figure, though he largely stayed out of the public spotlight. He maintained close ties with political elites and continued to offer his insights on various issues facing the country. He was known for his moderate views and his support for economic reform. While not always publicly vocal, his opinions carried weight within certain circles.
Mohammad Hashemi’s legacy is complex. He played a significant role in shaping the Iranian media landscape and contributing to the country’s administrative structure. While his close association with his brother brought him influence, he also developed his own reputation as a pragmatic and experienced technocrat. His passing marks the end of an era for many who witnessed the evolution of the Islamic Republic and the impact of the Rafsanjani family on Iranian politics.
