Colin Jerwood

Colin Jerwood is a British artist and activist best known as the lead vocalist for the influential anarcho-punk band Conflict. Born in 1959, his life and work are deeply intertwined with social justice, animal rights, and anti-establishment sentiment.

Conflict emerged from the vibrant UK punk scene of the early 1980s. Jerwood’s raw, passionate vocals and politically charged lyrics became a powerful voice for marginalized communities and a direct challenge to the Thatcher government. The band’s music, characterized by its aggressive sound and uncompromising message, tackled issues like police brutality, war, corporate greed, and animal experimentation. Their iconic logo, featuring a stylized ‘C’ incorporating a broken rifle, became a symbol of resistance for a generation.

Beyond the music, Jerwood was instrumental in establishing Conflict’s fiercely independent ethos. The band operated outside the mainstream music industry, releasing their music through their own Mortarhate Records label. This allowed them complete creative control and ensured that their message remained uncompromised. They actively supported grassroots activism, donating proceeds from record sales to various animal rights and anti-fascist organizations.

Jerwood’s activism extends beyond music. He is a dedicated animal rights advocate and has been involved in numerous campaigns against animal cruelty. He’s participated in demonstrations against vivisection and factory farming, often putting himself in harm’s way to raise awareness. His commitment to animal welfare is reflected in Conflict’s lyrics and their active support of groups like the Animal Liberation Front (ALF).

His artistic expression isn’t limited to music. Jerwood is also a visual artist, creating artwork that complements and expands upon the themes explored in Conflict’s music. His artwork often incorporates stark imagery, political slogans, and critiques of consumer culture. He’s known to use various mediums, reflecting the raw and DIY aesthetic that defines his overall approach.

While Conflict experienced periods of inactivity and internal conflicts, Jerwood’s dedication to his ideals remained unwavering. He continued to be a vocal critic of social injustice and a champion for animal rights. He understood that true change requires consistent effort and a willingness to challenge the status quo. Though often controversial, his relentless pursuit of a more just and compassionate world has cemented his place as an important figure in the history of punk rock and activist culture. Jerwood’s legacy lies not only in the music he created but also in the profound impact he had on inspiring others to question authority and fight for what they believe in.
