Monica Crowley is an American conservative political commentator, writer, and former government official. She is perhaps best known for her work as a commentator on Fox News and other conservative media outlets, and for her controversial tenure in the Trump administration.
Born in 1968, Crowley received her Ph.D. in International Affairs from Columbia University. She began her career as a research assistant to Richard Nixon after writing to him as a college student. This experience significantly shaped her political views and led to a long-standing admiration for Nixon. She later became a foreign policy assistant to Nixon and remained close to him until his death in 1994.
Crowley transitioned into media, becoming a prominent figure on Fox News. She hosted her own show, “The Monica Crowley Show,” and frequently appeared as a guest on other programs, offering commentary on political and social issues from a conservative perspective. She also contributed to other news outlets and published several books, including “Nixon Off the Record: His Secret Pieces of Peace,” and “What the (Bleep) Just Happened?”. Her writing and commentary often focused on topics such as American exceptionalism, the threat of liberalism, and the importance of a strong national defense.
In 2016, Crowley was selected by then President-elect Donald Trump to serve as Senior Director of Strategic Communications for the National Security Council (NSC). This appointment quickly became mired in controversy. Reports surfaced alleging that she had plagiarized significant portions of her doctoral dissertation and her 2012 book, “What the (Bleep) Just Happened?”. These allegations led to widespread criticism and calls for her to be withdrawn from the NSC position.
Following an internal review, Crowley ultimately chose not to take the position in the Trump administration. While she maintained her innocence, she stated that she did not want to be a distraction for the new administration. The White House accepted her decision, praising her intellect and understanding of national security issues.
After leaving the Trump transition team, Crowley largely returned to her career as a political commentator. In 2019, she was appointed Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the Treasury Department. She served in this role until January 2021, at the end of the Trump administration.
Monica Crowley remains a recognizable figure in conservative circles. Despite the controversies that have marked her career, she continues to be a voice for conservative viewpoints and remains a relevant commentator on American politics and culture.
